Codes Management Enforcement Inspector
The Codes Management Enforcement Inspector is responsible for enforcing all town ordinances. Inspections are conducted of residential and commercial properties located in the Town of Brentwood based on surveys or complaints. Code Enforcement does not handle animal complaints.
The ordinances which generate the most questions are detailed below. The official "Code of Brentwood" is available in the town hall for reference.
Rental Properties
Thorough inspections are performed on a yearly basis for the owner to retain a rental license. Licensing of rental properties is intended to enhance the safety of customers, tenants and the public in general by insuring compliance with fire, health and safety standards.
Parking Violations
Town ordinances contain numerous restrictions regarding parking within the town. The Codes Inspector and police officers enforce parking ordinances.
Inoperable Vehicles
Inoperable vehicles, unlicensed vehicles or vehicles with expired tags are presumed junked. A 48-hour notice is attached to such vehicle and if not brought into compliance with the Town Code in that period, the vehicle will be impounded. Inoperable vehicles are not permitted on public or private property.
General Maintenance of Property
The owner/occupant is responsible for the maintenance/upkeep of any property within the Town. It is the occupant's responsibility to keep grass mowed and the hedges trimmed away from the sidewalk so as not to obstruct passage.
Open Fires
It is unlawful to burn leaves, trash or other debris in the Town or Prince George's County.
Control of Dogs and Cats
All dogs must be licensed by Prince George's County. At all times dogs and cats must be confined and restricted from running at large. The owner must provide adequate care and have effective control so as to prevent the dog or cat from becoming a nuisance.
Removal of Snow and Ice
It is the responsibility of any property owner and/or occupant to remove and clear away snow and ice from the public sidewalk in front or abutting the property within 24 hours after such snow or sleet ceases to fall.
Health and Sanitation Regulations
It is unlawful to deposit or bury dead animals; discharge waste or refuse material upon streets, public places, accumulate waste or refuse material on private property or deposit refuse from businesses or private dwellings in public trash containers.
Trash Containers
Each household shall procure a watertight container with cover not greater than 30 gallons in capacity. On the day designated for garbage collections, each householder shall place the container with cover in place at the property line adjacent to the public street, but not back of a fence or hedge for collection. Do not leave containers out overnight or over weekends or holidays.
Motor Vehicle Repair
Motor vehicle repair is prohibited on residentially zoned property. This includes removal or replacement of mechanical parts or assemblies, body or chassis dismantling or painting. Minor maintenance such as changing lubricants, coolants, tires or tuning up engines, is permitted.
